Painting On The Edge in Vancouver - Federation Gallery

It's that time of year again, Summer on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC. The smells of salt laced ocean air, patio barbecues, seagulls calling and the buzz of tourists. It is the perfect slice of West Coast Canadiana. Federation Gallery, owned by the Federation of Canadian Artists (across the street from Emily Carr College of Art & Design) put on a juried art show of International works in oil paint, acrylics and watercolours. This year marks the 12th Annual Show in which artist's are asked to interpret the theme of 'painting on the edge'. The show opened Thursday, August 21st to crowds of art lovers from Vancouver and tourists from all over the world. This is my third year being included in this dynamic show. The show is up until September 7th, 2014. For more info please visit the FCA website

About my piece in this show: There’s No Place Like Home: #ICONICCANUCK is a body of work spanning three years reflecting on Canadian culture. Heading into 2014, I found myself coming home to BC reflecting on the journey of the past year. I spent time at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame painting athletes and in Edmonton mounting a solo show. In between was the road and the Rocky Mountains, in my fire engine red JEEP, wearing my ruby red Dr. Martens boots. In reflecting on this journey, I found a certain peace in returning home BC, to my studio on a nature sanctuary, off the ocean. Peaceful Paynes Grey days and stormy evening skies, turned to nights of dreaming. My favorite film as a child was, The Wizard of Oz. The message of, ‘there’s no place like home’, stays with me today. With thoughts of how fortunate I was for my year, for my great country and for my ruby red boots, I turned to the canvas to release my visual diary. I like to call this work the beginning of an evolving series titled, ‘A Canuck in OZ’. It is my ‘Canadian’ re-telling of OZ. In this case the red boots are my ruby slippers, the yellow brick road made from pages of an old Canadian Citizenship brochure, and the colours reminiscent of a Canadian Fall on the west coast. When I saw the call for POTE, I thought this piece, for me, embodies what POTE stands for, ‘painting on the edge’. I was standing on the edge of a precipice, where does my work evolve from the year before and how? Much like Dorothy stood at the foot of the yellow brick road. This is why I am happy to have this piece included in the show this year.
